Why Do Dogs Eat Grass?
- 18/10/2011
- Categorized in: Behaviour
Dogs love eating grass and some do it all the time Its a habit that worries many dog guardians. if you're one of them read on to find out if you should be concerned.
Dogs Need a Diverse Diet
Canines eat quite a variety of foods. Grass formed an integral part of their ancestors regular diet and as dogs are omnivorous, they eat plant matter as well as meat.
Even if a dog doesn't normally snack on grass, he'll look for a clump of grass to munch on when he's feeling unwell. The jury is still out as to whether grass makes them sick, or if they eat it to make them throw up.
Is consuming grass dangerous for dogs?
First, rest assured that you're not alone in your concern, especially if your dog is consuming grass and vomiting. Chewing on grass is actually quite common (it has been observed in wolves, too, and may be completely natural) and this does not usually cause too many problems.
A recent study of forty-nine dog owners whose pets had access to a garden found 79 per cent of them ate grass and other plants on occasion. Another survey about plant-eating canines found that grass was the most commonly eaten plant.
Why Do Dogs Eat Grass
Most dogs that eat grass show no outward symptoms of being ill before they do so. In fact, fewer than 10% seem to be sick before eating grass, according to their owners.
And grass-eating doesn't usually lead to throwing up - less than 25% of dogs that eat grass vomit regularly after grazing.Grass may, however provide a source of fibre.
In fact, within 3 days of adding a fibre supplement to his dog's food one owner reported that the dog stooped eating grass all together.
Is it okay for a dog to eat grass?
Dogs, unlike their feline counterparts, are not carnivores, and they can quite obviously obtain nutrients from a variety of plants.
Why then do they throw up after eating grass? The experts can't give an answer to that one, but all agreed that chewing grass poses no direct danger to your dog.
On the contrary, dogs seem to enjoy munching on grass, and to suffer no ill effects from doing so.
Your dog may also be eating plants and grass because he's bored. if you suspect this to be the case, it might be beneficial to be sure he's getting enough exercise.
